In the vacation club vs timeshare matchup, the key difference is what you buy. A timeshare sells the right to use a resort for a set time each year. A points vacation club sells a yearly allotment of points to spend across its resorts. Both usually charge yearly fees. A travel club sells membership access to member rates.
Same beach, or a new one? Some travelers want the same spot every year; others want somewhere new each trip. That one choice settles most of this matchup.
Sales desks, travel blogs and resort brochures use "vacation club" and "timeshare" as if they were the same thing. Sometimes they are. Sometimes they are not even close. This fight card puts three contenders in the ring: the timeshare, the points vacation club, and the travel club.
Full disclosure: World Sky Travel Club is a travel club, so we have a corner. We have kept the timeshare and vacation club facts neutral and cited the Federal Trade Commission, so you can check the scoring yourself. Keep scrolling to gather the fight card, then tap a bout to jump to it.

| The tape | Red cornerTimeshare | Black cornerPoints vacation club | The challengerTravel club |
|---|---|---|---|
| You hold | Time at a resort: a week, a season, or points | A yearly allotment of points | A membership, with no property or points |
| Form | Deeded real property or a right-to-use contract | Often a points-based timeshare sold by a resort brand | Access to negotiated member rates |
| You pay | Purchase price, then yearly maintenance fees | A purchase or initiation fee, then yearly dues or fees | Membership dues (World Sky: low, fixed monthly dues) |
| Style | Same resort, same week, year after year | Different resorts inside one brand's network | A new place every trip, plus flights, cars and cruises |
Here is the part most comparison articles skip: "vacation club" has no single meaning. The FTC's guide, Timeshares, Vacation Clubs, and Related Scams, describes two very different products sold under the same name:
The FTC's advice is blunt: before you enroll, be clear on what you're getting, because salespeople may use the term "vacation club" to mean different things. When someone pitches a vacation club, ask directly: Am I buying points in a resort program, or paying for access to member rates? The answer tells you which corner you are standing in.
Seven rounds, three contenders. Where one side clearly takes the round, it gets the edge marker. Where it depends on the contract, we say so.

|---|---|---|---|
| RD 1What you buy | Time at a resort, deeded or right-to-use | Yearly points in a resort network | A membership with member rates |
| RD 2Yearly cost | Maintenance fees, which the FTC says typically rise at or above inflation, plus any special assessments | Yearly dues or maintenance fees set by the program | Dues. World Sky: low, fixed monthly dues, no maintenance fees, no assessments |
| RD 3Predictability | A fixed week gives you the same place at the same time each year | Depends on points and booking windows | You choose each trip; rates vary by date and availability |

| RD 6Passing it on | A deeded timeshare may pass to heirs | Depends on the contract | A membership, so there is no property to inherit |
| RD 7Getting out | Resale is often hard, per the FTC | Depends on the contract; ask how to cancel | Depends on the membership terms; ask how to cancel |

Timeshare points are the engine behind most vacation clubs, so they deserve their own round. You receive a set number of points each year and spend them on stays. According to the FTC, the number of points a stay costs depends on four things:
Two more rules matter. At some programs, unused points expire at the end of the year and do not carry over. And if you run short, some programs let you buy extra points, which the FTC says to price out before you sign. The question to ask yourself: will my yearly points cover the trips I actually want to take?
No contender wins every fight. The right pick depends on how you travel. Be honest about your last few vacations, then read the column that sounds like you.
The FTC recommends getting answers to these before you commit to a timeshare or a vacation club:
To check the rules in the state where a resort sits, USA.gov lists every state consumer protection office.

Claim Your CertificateA timeshare gives you the right to use a resort for a set time each year, as a deeded interest or a right-to-use contract. A points vacation club gives you points each year to spend across its resorts. Many points clubs are run by timeshare companies, and both usually charge yearly fees.
The term covers different products. The FTC notes that some vacation clubs are a variation of a timeshare with an initial fee, while others promise discounts on travel, lodging or other amenities once you enroll. Ask exactly what you are buying before you join.
Sometimes. Points-based vacation clubs sold by resort developers work much like timeshares, with an upfront purchase and yearly fees. A travel club membership works another way: you pay dues for access to member rates and do not buy time at a resort.
You receive a set number of points each year and spend them on stays. The FTC says the points you need depend on the length of stay, the type of unit, the location and the time of year, and at some timeshares unused points expire each year.
If you want flexibility without owning time at a resort, a travel club is one option. World Sky Travel Club members pay low, fixed monthly dues, with no maintenance fees or assessments, and book resorts, cruises, flights, cars and tours at member rates.
Many contracts include a short cancellation window, often called a right of rescission or cooling-off period. State law or the contract sets its length. After that, ask the company how to cancel a club membership or whether it offers a timeshare exit program.
Yes. The Be Our Guest offer includes a 2-night stay in Las Vegas or Orlando, a $100 Dining Advantage Card, and a bonus 2-night trip to your choice of 30 destinations. Terms apply, including a refundable $100 deposit and a vacation club orientation.
