All-Inclusive Family Vacations: How to Pick Resorts the Whole Crew Loves

All-inclusive family vacation resorts bundle your room, meals, snacks, drinks, pools and most kids' activities into one price, so you are not paying for every juice box. The best ones for families add a supervised kids' club, rooms that sleep the whole crew, and calm, swimmable beaches. Always confirm what the rate leaves out before you book.

TL;DR

  • Pick the resort by your kids' ages: kids' club age range, room size, and how calm the beach is.
  • "All-inclusive" covers the resort. Flights, transfers, excursions and resort fees are often extra.
  • Compare the total trip price for everyone, not the nightly rate for two adults.
  • World Sky members book resorts, family airfare, cars, theme parks and tours at member rates in one place.

01Start here

Planning a family trip usually means a spreadsheet of flights, hotel rooms, meal money and "what are the kids going to do all day?" An all-inclusive family vacation collapses most of that into one booking. You still have choices to make, though, and the resort that looks perfect in photos can be a bad fit for a four-year-old or a bored fourteen-year-old.

This guide covers what family resorts really include, how to judge them, where families tend to go, how to keep the cost down, and how World Sky Travel Club members book the whole trip in one place.

02What's included

What do all-inclusive family vacation resorts include?

At most all-inclusive resorts, one rate covers your room, meals, snacks and drinks, plus the pools, beach, daytime activities and evening shows. Family-focused resorts usually add a kids' club with supervised activities, and some add splash pads, teen lounges or water slides.

The fine print is where families get surprised. These items are often extra, so ask about each one:

  • Resort fees and taxes, which may be charged per night or at checkout.
  • Airport transfers between the airport and the resort.
  • Off-site excursions such as snorkel trips, boat tours or theme parks.
  • Babysitting in the evening, and kids' club hours outside the posted schedule.
  • Specialty restaurants that need a reservation or carry a surcharge.
  • Spa treatments and premium drinks.

None of that makes all-inclusive a bad deal. It just means the smart comparison is the total price for your whole family, with every add-on you actually plan to use.

The pool is often where the week happens. Look at the pools a resort has, and how shallow they get, before you compare prices.
03Picking the resort

How to pick the best all-inclusive family resorts

"Best" depends on who is coming. A resort built around a lively pool bar may thrill teenagers and exhaust a toddler. Use your kids' ages as the filter, then check these five things before you look at price.

1. The kids' club, in detail

Ask for the age range, the daily hours, and whether kids must be potty trained. Some clubs split children into age groups; others lump everyone together. If you have a teen, ask whether there is anything for them at all.

2. The room, not just the resort

Many standard rooms have a maximum occupancy, and a family of five may need a suite or two connecting rooms. Get the connecting-room request confirmed, not just noted.

3. The beach and the pools

Some coastlines have strong surf. Ask whether the resort's beach is calm enough for kids to swim, and whether there is a shallow pool or splash area.

4. The food

A buffet is a picky eater's best friend. Check buffet hours too, since kids get hungry at odd times.

5. The travel day

A short, direct flight and a short transfer can matter more than a fancier lobby. Two hours in a van after a long flight is hard on everyone.

04Where families go

All-inclusive family resorts in Mexico and the Caribbean

Mexico and the Caribbean are where most U.S. families go for all-inclusive trips, because resorts there are built around the all-inclusive model and many U.S. cities have flights to their airports. Each area feels different, so match it to your family. Here is a quick guide to the regions in World Sky's sample trips:

DestinationFly intoWhat families should know
Cancun, MexicoCUNA long resort strip. Beaches on the northern shore, facing Isla Mujeres, are usually calmer than the east-facing ones.
Punta Cana, Dominican RepublicPUJLong sandy beaches on the island's eastern tip, lined with large resorts.
Puerto Plata, Dominican RepublicPOPOn the north coast. World Sky's sample trip is 4 days and 3 nights all-inclusive.
Los Cabos, MexicoSJDDesert meets ocean. Many Pacific-facing beaches have strong surf, so ask if your resort's beach is swimmable.
Tulum & Puerto Morelos, MexicoCUN / TQOQuieter stretches of the Riviera Maya. Tulum's newer airport (TQO) opened in late 2023.
Orlando, FloridaMCOTheme parks instead of all-inclusive resorts. No passport needed for U.S. citizens.

Timing and paperwork

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, and it covers the Caribbean and Mexico's Caribbean coast. Many families still travel then, but travel insurance and flexible dates are worth a look. School holidays are usually the busiest and priciest weeks.

For trips outside the U.S., every traveler needs the right documents, including babies. Check the current passport rules for children on the U.S. State Department's travel site, and read the TSA's tips for traveling with children. TSA allows formula, breast milk and baby food in carry-ons in amounts over 3.4 ounces; tell the officer at the start of screening.

05Keeping it cheap

All-inclusive family vacation packages and how to keep them cheap

"Package" can mean a lot of things. Sometimes it is the resort plus the flight. Sometimes it is the resort plus transfers. All-inclusive describes the resort, not the airfare, so read what the package bundles before you compare prices.

Cheap all-inclusive family vacations are less about finding a magic sale and more about removing waste. These habits help:

  • Price the whole family. A low rate for two adults can jump once you add kids. If the resort has a kids-stay-free policy, check the age cutoff.
  • Travel outside school holidays when you can. The same room often costs less a week or two later.
  • Count the add-ons you will use. Transfers, one excursion and resort fees belong in the comparison.
  • Book the pieces together. Flight times that line up with check-in save a wasted first day.
  • Check the same trip on public sites. A real deal holds up when you compare it.

Floats, masks and a bucket keep kids busy for hours. Ask which water activities the resort includes and which cost extra.
06Beyond the beach

Family vacations beyond the beach: theme parks and cruises

Not every family wants a week by the pool. Two other trip styles work a lot like all-inclusive:

Theme park trips. Orlando is built for families, and the big costs are park tickets and lodging. World Sky members get theme park tickets and guided tours at member pricing, booked alongside the hotel. Our Orlando vacation packages guide walks through it.

Cruises. A cruise bundles your cabin, most meals and onboard entertainment, and it moves between ports while the kids sleep. World Sky's sample trips include a 5-day, 4-night cruise to the Caribbean or Mexico. See Caribbean cruise deals for how that works.

08FAQ

All-inclusive family vacations FAQ

What is included at all-inclusive family vacation resorts?

Most include your room, meals, snacks, drinks, pools, nightly entertainment and a kids' club. Many charge extra for spa treatments, off-site excursions, some specialty restaurants, babysitting and premium drinks. Resort fees and taxes may be separate too, so ask for the total before you book.

How do I choose the best all-inclusive family resorts?

Start with your kids' ages. Check the kids' club age range and hours, whether one room sleeps your whole family or connects to a second room, whether the beach is calm enough to swim, and how long the flight is. Then compare the total price, including any resort fees.

Are all-inclusive family resorts in Mexico a good choice?

For many U.S. families, yes. Cancun (CUN) and Los Cabos (SJD) are easy to reach from many U.S. cities. Beaches differ by area: many Los Cabos beaches have strong surf, while Cancun's northern shore, facing Isla Mujeres, is usually calmer. Check passport rules for every traveler, kids included.

How can I find cheap all-inclusive family vacations?

Travel outside school holidays when you can, compare the full trip price instead of the nightly rate, check the age cutoff on any kids-stay-free policy, and book the flight, room and transfers together. World Sky members also get member rates on resorts, flights and rental cars, backed by the 200% Promise.

Do all-inclusive family vacation packages include airfare?

Some do and some do not, so read the package details. All-inclusive usually describes the resort, not the flight. World Sky Travel Club members get member pricing on airfare for two adults or the whole family, booked in the same place as the resort.

Can I try World Sky Travel Club before booking a family trip?

Yes. The Be Our Guest offer is a 2-night stay in Las Vegas or Orlando for two adults over 21, plus a $100 Dining Advantage Card and a Bonus Trip Certificate, both issued at a vacation club orientation. A refundable $100 deposit is required before traveling, and other terms apply.
