  • World Sky's sample trip: 4 days and 3 nights all-inclusive in Puerto Plata for two adults, at member rates.
  • Playa Dorada, just east of the city, is a resort area; the beach towns of Sosúa and Cabarete are a short drive farther east.

01The trip

Puerto Plata gives you more than a resort strip: a real old town, a mountain you can see from the beach, and small beach towns a short drive away.

This guide walks through World Sky's 4-day Puerto Plata all inclusive sample trip, where to stay on the north coast, the best things to do between pool days, when to go, and how the trip compares with Punta Cana. Everything here is written to help you judge a trip, not to push a particular resort.

World Sky's 4-day Puerto Plata all inclusive sample trip

One of the sample trips World Sky lists for members is simple: four days and three nights, all-inclusive, in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, for two adults. A sample trip is an example of what members book at member rates. It is not a fixed package, and it is not part of the free Be Our Guest offer. Call 855-557-2582 for current member pricing and dates.

4Days
3Nights

Sample trip: Puerto Plata for two

All-inclusive stay for two adults, booked through the member portal. Here is one way to spend it. Excursions are usually extra, so price them separately.

  1. Land at POP, transfer to your resort, and settle in with a long first afternoon on the beach.
  2. Head into the city: the Malecón, Fortaleza San Felipe and the Amber Museum. Ride the cable car up Mount Isabel de Torres if it is running.
  3. A full resort day, or a day trip east to Sosúa for snorkeling and Cabarete for the wind-sports scene.
  4. A slow breakfast, a last swim and the flight home.

Four days is short, so the trip works best when you choose a resort close to what you want. If you plan to spend a day in the old city, stay near it. If you only want the beach, a quieter stretch farther out may suit you better. Keep scrolling to gather the stops, then tap a card to jump to that part of the guide.

02Why Puerto Plata

Why Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic?

Puerto Plata sits on the Dominican Republic's Atlantic-facing north coast, a region known as the Amber Coast for the amber found in the area. The city itself has a historic center and a long seafront promenade, the Malecón, and Mount Isabel de Torres rises behind it. That mix of town, mountain and beach sets Puerto Plata apart from the flatter resort strips elsewhere in the country.

03Where to stay

Where to stay: Playa Dorada, Sosúa and Cabarete

Most Puerto Plata all-inclusive resorts sit in a handful of spots along the coast. Where you land shapes the trip, since the drive between them adds up on a short stay.

Playa Dorada and the city side

Playa Dorada is a resort area on the east side of Puerto Plata city. It suits travelers who want a classic resort stay but still want easy trips into the old town, the fort and the Malecón.

Puerto Plata and Sosúa

Sosúa is a beach town east of Playa Dorada, usually a short drive away. Its bay is known for calm water and snorkeling. Many travelers who search for Puerto Plata and Sosúa together are weighing a resort near one town with day trips to the other, which works well on this coast.

Cabarete

Cabarete, a little past Sosúa, is known for kitesurfing and windsurfing. It has a younger, more active feel than the resort areas closer to the city.

How to pick the best all inclusive resorts in Puerto Plata

  • Check the beach, not just the pool. Ask whether the resort's beach is good for swimming or mostly for looking at.
  • Count the transfer. On a 4-day trip, a long drive from POP eats into your beach time.
  • Read the dining rules. Ask how many à la carte dinners are included and whether you need to book them.
  • Ask about adults-only or family sections. Some resorts split them; others are one or the other.
  • Get the total price. Confirm taxes, service charges and any daily resort fees before you pay.
04Things to do

Things to do in Puerto Plata

An all-inclusive makes it easy to never leave the resort. In Puerto Plata that would be a shame, because the best sights are close by:

  • Mount Isabel de Torres cable car. The teleférico climbs to the summit for views over the city and coast. Check that it is running before you go.
  • Fortaleza San Felipe. The old Spanish fort on the waterfront, at one end of the Malecón.
  • The Malecón. Puerto Plata's seafront promenade, good for an evening walk.
  • The Amber Museum. The Museo del Ámbar Dominicano in the city center explains the amber that gave the coast its name.
  • Sosúa and Cabarete. Snorkeling in Sosúa's bay, then wind-sports watching and beach bars in Cabarete.

Puerto Plata cruise port days

Puerto Plata has two cruise ports, Amber Cove and Taino Bay. When ships are in, the city's best-known sights can get busier. If you are staying at a resort, a quick look at the cruise schedule can help you pick a quieter day for your city trip.

05Weather

Puerto Plata weather and when to go

Puerto Plata is warm all year. Beyond that, planning mostly comes down to storms, crowds and your own calendar.

  • Winter and spring are generally the busiest times, as travelers escape cold weather back home.
  • Showers can happen in any month on this coast, so check the forecast the week you travel and pack a light rain layer.
  • Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. NOAA's National Hurricane Center says most activity falls between mid-August and mid-October.

If your dates fall in late summer or fall, read the cancellation terms before you book and keep an eye on the tropics. Many travelers also compare travel insurance options for trips in this window.
