01Start here

Punta Cana is the Dominican Republic's big beach resort region, and all-inclusive is the default way people stay there. That makes shopping easy and comparing hard. Two resorts can look alike on a booking site and still give you very different trips once you count transfers, dinners and fees.

This guide covers what a Punta Cana all inclusive stay usually includes, which part of the coast fits which traveler, when to go, and how to tell a real deal from a low headline price. It also explains how World Sky Travel Club members book the same kind of trip at member rates.

02What's included

What a Punta Cana all inclusive stay usually includes

"All-inclusive" is a marketing term, not a legal standard, so every resort draws the line in a slightly different place. Still, most Punta Cana resorts follow the same basic pattern. Your nightly rate covers the room and almost everything you eat and drink on the property. Anything that leaves the property, or anything that feels like a splurge, is where extra charges tend to show up.

Usually includedOften costs extra
Your room and daily housekeepingRoom upgrades, ocean-view or swim-up categories
Buffet and casual restaurants, snacksSome à la carte or specialty dinners, or limits on how many you can book
House wine, beer, cocktails, soft drinksPremium spirits and bottled wine at some resorts
Pools, beach loungers, nightly showsSpa treatments and private cabanas
Non-motorized water sports such as kayaksMotorized sports, diving and off-site excursions
Kids club at family resortsAirport transfers, unless your package says otherwise

The table is a starting point, not a promise. Read the inclusions page for the exact resort you are booking, and pay special attention to dinner reservations. At some resorts the à la carte restaurants fill up days ahead, which matters if you picked the resort for its food.

03Where to stay

Where to stay: Bávaro, Cap Cana or Uvero Alto

"Punta Cana" is used loosely for the whole eastern coast. Most all-inclusive resorts sit in three areas, and the one you pick shapes your trip more than most travelers expect, mostly because of the drive from the airport and what is within reach once you arrive.

AreaGood fit forKeep in mind
BávaroFirst-timers, groups and families who want the most resort choice along a long beachThe busiest area, with more shops, restaurants and excursions nearby
Cap CanaCouples who want an upscale stay close to the airport, with a marina and golfRates often run higher; fewer casual options outside the resorts
Uvero AltoTravelers who want quiet beaches and a get-away-from-it-all feelThe longest transfer from PUJ, roughly an hour, and little to walk to

Punta Cana all inclusive adults only resorts

Adults-only resorts are popular for honeymoons and couples trips. You trade the kids club and splash pad for quieter pools and, often, more à la carte dining. Check the minimum age, since it varies by resort, and ask whether a resort is fully adults-only or has an adults-only section inside a larger family property.

Punta Cana all inclusive family resorts

For families, look past the pool slide. Ask how the kids club is staffed and what ages it takes, whether connecting rooms or family suites are available, and how far the family rooms are from the beach. A resort that is a short walk to the sand saves a lot of daily hauling of towels and toys.

04Best time to go

The best time to go to Punta Cana

Punta Cana is warm all year, so "best" depends on what you care about most: dry weather, lower rates or smaller crowds.

  • December through April is generally the driest and busiest stretch, with winter holidays and spring break pushing demand up. Book early for these dates.
  • May and June are usually warmer and quieter. Short afternoon showers are common across the Caribbean at this time of year.
  • Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. NOAA's National Hurricane Center puts the peak around September 10, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October.

Traveling in the fall can make sense if you watch the forecast and read the cancellation terms before you pay. Many travelers who go in late summer or fall also buy travel insurance; that is a personal decision, so compare policies before you choose.

Calm, clear water like this is what most people picture for a Caribbean all-inclusive. On the open-ocean side of any island, check whether a resort's beach is sheltered enough for swimming.

Evenings are when resort differences show: some are lively with shows and music, others stay quiet after dinner.
05Judging deals

How to judge all inclusive resort deals in Punta Cana

Search for Punta Cana all-inclusive and "deals" are everywhere. The problem is that headline prices rarely show the whole trip. Before you call anything a bargain, run it through these questions:

  • Is the price per person or per room? Many all-inclusive rates are quoted per person, per night. Make sure you compare the same thing.
  • Are taxes and service charges in the total? A low teaser rate can grow once they are added at checkout.
  • Who pays for the airport transfer? It matters more for Uvero Alto than for Cap Cana.
  • Which room category is this? A deal on the smallest garden-view room is not the same as the ocean-view photo in the ad.
  • How many specialty dinners can you book? Some resorts limit them or add a charge.
  • What happens if you cancel? Nonrefundable rates can cost you the whole trip if plans change.

A deal that passes all six is worth taking seriously. A deal that only wins on the headline number usually is not.

06Packages vs member rates

Punta Cana vacation packages with flight vs. member rates

Most people book Punta Cana in one of two ways. They buy a vacation package that bundles the resort and the flight, or they book each piece on its own at public prices. Packages can be convenient, and sometimes they are cheaper. But the bundle hides the individual prices, which makes it hard to know whether you are saving anything.

A travel club adds a third way. World Sky members pay low, fixed monthly dues and book resorts, airfare and rental cars at member rates, all in one place. That means you can price a Punta Cana all inclusive with flight as a package and as separate pieces, then choose. If you want the background on how that model works, read What Is a Travel Club?

"Membership is the whole advantage. Your dues stay fixed and your access does not shrink."

World Sky Travel Club

Every member booking is backed by the 200% Promise: the Guaranteed Lowest Price or Double the Difference back in Cash. Membership also covers far more than one island. Members reach 4,000+ resorts and hotels in 100+ countries, Caribbean and Mexico cruises, theme park tickets and guided tours at member pricing.

There are no escalating maintenance fees, no assessments and no points to chase, which is the main difference from a timeshare. Your dues do not change whether you take one Punta Cana trip a year or several trips to different places.

09FAQ

Punta Cana all inclusive FAQ

What does all inclusive in Punta Cana usually include?

Most Punta Cana all-inclusive resorts include your room, meals, snacks, drinks, pools, nightly entertainment and non-motorized water sports. Airport transfers, spa treatments, excursions, premium drinks and some specialty restaurants often cost extra, so check each resort's list before you book.

What is the best time to go to Punta Cana?

December through April is generally the driest and busiest stretch. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October, according to NOAA's National Hurricane Center.

Which part of Punta Cana is best for an all-inclusive stay?

Bávaro has the widest choice of resorts and a long beach. Cap Cana sits close to the airport and leans upscale. Uvero Alto is quieter and farther north. Pick the area that fits your trip and how long a transfer you are willing to ride.

Are Punta Cana all inclusive packages with flight a better deal?

Sometimes. A package saves time, but compare it against booking the resort and the flight separately. World Sky members can book resorts, airfare and rental cars at member rates in one place and compare before paying.

Is Punta Cana one of the Be Our Guest bonus destinations?

No. The Be Our Guest bonus trip covers 30 destinations, including Cancun, Jamaica, the Bahamas, Los Cabos and San Juan, but not Punta Cana. Punta Cana is one of World Sky's Beach Escape sample trips, booked at member rates.

What airport do you fly into for Punta Cana?

Most travelers fly into Punta Cana International Airport, airport code PUJ. It sits close to the main resort areas of Bávaro and Cap Cana, while Uvero Alto is a longer drive north.
